Think Before You Throw

BEFORE YOU CAST A STONE

(Revised, by Grace Burford)

I stood beside the water; it was quiet, calm and still. Then someone cast a stone, as children often will.

With a tiny splash it landed, then quickly sank below; but it broke the peaceful silence; the water’s tranquil glow.

The splash became a ripple, that extended far and wide, ‘till it’s ever spreading current, touched the shore on every side.

And then I started thinking; this is so akin to life. For one word, rashly spoken, can stir up endless strife.

If a stone can stir a lake, from gentle peace and calm; a careless word that’s uttered, can bring unending harm.

And like the rippling water, that spreads from shore to shore, reckless words can hurt forever, and close a neighbor's door.

For no matter how we try, it’s impossible to recall, a word that spreads like ripples, and causes someone's fall.

For who can stem a river, or halt the ocean’s tide? Or stop the fire that rages, across the countryside?

Let him who is now perfect, feel free to cast a stone; Then maybe we will never see...another insult thrown.

PLEASE ATTEND OUR NO EXCUSE SUNDAY

In order to improve our Sunday morning attendance, our 1st Annual “No Excuse Sunday” will occur next week.
Moreover, we will do our utmost to compensate for excuses routinely offered by those who frequently miss.
·        Cots and pillows will be available for those who claim, “Sunday is my only day to sleep in.”
·        Padded lounge chairs will be offered to those that feel that our pews are too hard.
·        Eye drops will be available for attendees manifesting red, tired eyes from staying up late on Saturday night.
·        Hard hats will be distributed to those concerned that the roof might cave in if they show up on Sunday.
·        Comforters will be distributed to those who complain that the building is cold, and extra fans for those who say that it is too hot.
·        Note cards will be available for those wishing to list all the hypocrites present.
·        A dinner and extra chairs will be provided for those that claim that they cannot attend because they have to cook for company.
·        The preacher will NOT preach on “Giving" in order to appease those that whine that the church is always asking for money.
·        Several saplings, small shrubs and live flowers will be brought in to appease those who prefer to worship out in nature.
·        A doctor and several nurses will be on call for those who plan to be sick.
·        The auditorium will be decorated with Christmas poinsettias and Easter lilies for those who have never seen the auditorium without them.
·        Hearing aids will be provided for those who cannot hear the preacher, and ear plugs for those who grumble because they can.

Is It Worth It?

Worth the Search

While on vacation in Myrtle Beach, I occasionally encounter someone scanning the beach with a metal detector. Such people methodically walk back and forth, moving their instruments inches above ground. Asking one man if he had ever found anything of value, he replied, "Oh yes. Over the years I have found diamond rings, rare coins, jewelry, watches, and more pocket change than I can count." And then he added, “Sometimes I don’t find anything, but when I discover something of value, it’s worth the search.”

**********************************************************************************************

When Jesus instructed His followers to go into all the world and preach the gospel (Mark 16:15), did He not have something similar in mind? That is, although the majority of  people may have little interest in going to heaven, the few that do are definitely"worth the search".

As Christians, we frequently focus on the need to grow spiritually and remain faithful to Jesus. However, we must not overlook the fact that pleasing our Savior involves helping others to get to heaven. To comply with the Great Commission and follow in Jesus' steps we need to “seek and save that which is lost” (Luke 19:10).

Sharing Jesus is not always easy, and many will ignore or reject the gospel message. But even if only one soul in ten thousand hears and heeds the call of Christ, it is definitely "worth the search".

May God help us to search daily for lost souls that need Jesus Christ.

"I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance." (Luke 15:7)

Jesus, always Jesus!
